Nina Berman
Overview
Nina Berman is a documentary photographer who has photographed and produced stories for magazines worldwide since 1990. Her editorial clients include TIME, National Geographic, German Geo, and British Marie Claire. . Her work has been exhibited in individual and groups shows in New York , Washington D.C., France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. She has received several photographic awards, including World Press Pictures of the Year and Communication Arts. She is on the faculty of the International Center of Photography and an advisor at the School of Visual Arts, both in New York City.
Past projects have included a documentary investigation for TIME on rape and ethnic cleansing of Muslim women in Bosnia, a cover story for Newsweek on life under the Taliban in Afghanistan, a portfolio of images for Harpers on the corporate homogenization of Times Square and a personal project on the rise of the militia movement and the political and religious right in the United States.
Her first book, "Purple Hearts -- Back from Iraq," portraits and interviews with American soldiers wounded in the Iraq War, was published by Trolley in August 2004. Excerpts were published in 12 countries and featured on several American TV programs. A film, inspired by the book, was produced by the Dutch documentary unit VPRO. She is the recipient of a 2005 documentary grant from the Open Society Institute. Nina Berman lives in her hometown of New York City.
